Mrs Henderson Presents

Don't miss Mrs Henderson Presents, the hilarious, brand-new, five-star musical that's had critics in raptures, as it makes its West End debut in February 2016. Based on the much-loved film that starred Dame Judi Dench and Bob Hoskins, the show's run at the Theatre Royal Bath was hailed by the Guardian as "a shot in the arm for the British musical"and led Quentin Letts of the Daily Mail to exclaim, "I have not emerged from the theatre feeling quite so cheerful in a long time". It's London, 1937, and recently-widowed eccentric, Laura Henderson, is looking for a way of spending her time and money when her attention falls on a run-down former cinema in Great Windmill Street. Hiring feisty impresario Vivian Van Damm to look after the newly renovated Windmill Theatre, the improbable duo present a bill of non-stop variety acts. But as war looms something more is required to boost morale and box office... When Mrs Henderson comes up with the idea of The Windmill Girls - glamorous young women posing as nude statues - audiences flock. And as the Blitz hits London, The Windmill provides a refuge for all, boasting the spirit-raising slogan "We Never Close". With book and direction by the Tony Award-winning Terry Johnson (La Cage Aux Folles), lyrics by the multi-award-winning Don Black (Sunset Boulevard) and music by George Fenton and Simon Chamberlain, this glorious and heartwarming new production stars Tracie Bennett (Les Misérables, End of the Rainbow, ITV's Coronation Street), Olivier-nominated Ian Bartholomew (Into the Woods) and Emma Williams (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang).'It's bright as a showgirl's sequin and patriotic as a jam sandwich.' - The IndependentBOOK TICKETS Watch 'If mountains were easy to climb' performed by Emma Williams here.

2016 Grawemeyer Award for Hans Abrahamsen

The prestigious Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition has this year been given to Edition Wilhelm Hansen composer Hans Abrahamsen for his orchestral song cycle let me tell you. The work, setting a text by Paul Griffiths, was premiered in 2013 by the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Andris Nelsons. The soprano part was sung by Barbara Hannigan to whom the work is dedicated. The Grawemeyer Awards announcement states: ’My words may be poor but they will have to do,’ intones Ophelia in the opening poem. Abrahamsen’s score infuses those limited words with emotional nuance and depth, said Grawemeyer award director Marc Satterwhite.’The vocal lines exquisitely mirror Griffiths’ fragile texts of the doomed Ophelia,’ said Satterwhite. ’The orchestra is a partner rather than mere accompanist and the composer draws a huge array of colors from the orchestra, delicate and shimmering more often than not, but occasionally in fuller force.’Hans Abrahamsen is the first Dane to receive the Grawemeyer Award. let me tell you is the second Grawemeyer Award-winning work on which music critic, poet and novelist Paul Griffiths collaborated. He also wrote the libretto for Marco Polo, which won Tan Dun the 1998 Grawemeyer Award in Music Composition. let me tell you has had an overwhelming 18 performances since its world premiere in December 2013 and more are planned, including the US premiere in January 2016 with the Cleveland Orchestra, to be conducted by Frans Welser-Möst with Barbara Hannigan as the soloist.
