Bio

Hildur Guðnadóttir is an Icelandic cello player, composer and singer who has been manifesting herself at the forefront of experimental pop and contemporary music. In her solo works she draws out a broad spectrum of sounds from her instrument, ranging from intimate simplicity to huge soundscapes.

Gudnadóttir began playing cello as a child, entered the Reykjavík Music Academy and then moved on to musical studies/composition and new media at the Iceland Academy of the Arts and Universitat der Kunste in Berlin. Back in Iceland, she became very active in the neu-Iceland scene as a member of Kitchen Motors, a Reykjavík based think tank, record label and an art collective along with Jóhann Jóhannsson.

She released her first solo album, Mount A, under the artist name Lost in the Hildurness, on the Reykjavík based label 12 Tónar in 2006. The album was recorded in New York City, and at ‘Hólar in Hjaltadalur’, a historic spot in Iceland with a house named Audunarstofa. Guðnadóttir played all the instruments on the album – vibraphone, viola da gamba, harp and vocals. This was followed by three further solo albums: Without Sinking (2009), Leyfðu Ljósinu (2012) and Saman (2014). Her records have been nominated a number of times for the Icelandic Music Awards and Without Sinking was chosen as one of the albums of the year at the Kraumur Awards.

As a composer she has written music for television, film, theatre, dance and concert hall. The Icelandic Symphony Orchestra, Icelandic National Theatre, Tate Modern, The British Film Institute, The Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm and Gothenburg National Theatre are amongst the institutions that have commissioned new works by Hildur. She has scored numerous media projects including Sicario: Day Of The Soldado, Mary Magdalene, Trapped, The Joker, Strong Island and the hugely successful HBO / Sky Atlantic series Chernobyl, for which the soundtrack won praise from audiences and critics alike. Her work as a composer has received nominations from the Emmys, World Soundtrack Awards, Nordic Music Council Prize and Robert Prize, as well as winning the Griman award for her theatre score to King Lear in 2011.
