Bio

By the age of ten, classically trained Neil Cowley had performed a Shostakovich piano concerto to a full house at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall. Yet he turned his back on formal education in his early teens to join a Blues Brothers covers band (“as a way” he says, “of getting into pubs”) and went on to play with some of the biggest funk and soul bands of the day including Brand New Heavies and Zero 7. He formed a highly successful chill-out production duo, Fragile State, played huge raves with a psychedelic trance band and co-wrote a hit single (with Michael Jackson sidekick Siedah Garrett) for funky house duo The Freemasons. Yet having extracted music from a computer chip for so long, he returned to his first love, the piano and formed Neil Cowley Trio in 2005.

To date Cowley has released six highly acclaimed studio albums with his trio – Displaced, winner of the 2007 BBC Jazz Award for Best Album; Loud Louder Stop, hailed by Mojo as a “Modern Classic”; Radio Silence; The Face of Mount Molehill which saw him arranging for a string ensemble and bagged him the 2013 Jazz Fm award for Best UK Jazz Act and Touch And Flee which he describes as his ‘concert hall album’ cementing his credentials as a brilliant, dazzling composer. His latest release, Spacebound Apes, was released at the end of 2016 and spawned the single Grace, which to date has received over 12 million plays on Spotify.

Cowley’s experience across many genres – classical, pop, funk, jazz, rock and electronica -have all played their role in creating his unique trademark sound. His compositions are defined by massive dynamic range and contrast where ferociously forceful, hook laden melodies and thundering crescendos meet reflective, tender moments of heart shattering beauty, often in the same piece. As one writer noted, Cowley’s music “features power pop songs without words, soundtracks in search of a film, exploratory minimalist miniatures, and the coolest TV theme tunes you’ll ever hear”. Above all, his music is powerful and emotional. As a writer and performer Cowley connects with his audience.

Aside from his trio recordings, Cowley has become the go-to pianist by producers that require a jazz technique and rhythmic suppleness to their artful pop hits. Indeed, his work with Adele on 19 and her global chart topper, 21 made him quite literally 2011’s most listened to pianist on the planet. Other acts include Emile Sande, Birdy and Rhianna.

Cowley’s music has featured on numerous TV shows and adverts including Guinness, Visit London and Vodafone while he has composed music for Nokia and the Maltese Tourist Board. He composed the soundtracks for films Inside the Mind of DH Lawrence (2013) and Balzan’s Contract (2012).
