Bio

Born in Uruguay in 1979 to a family of musicians, Florencia Di Concilio is an established voice in concert and film music and one of the most prominent composers in France, where she resides and works.

Composer in Residence for the Miami Symphony Orchestra, Florencia has been commissioned several pieces by the orchestra. Her Second Piano Concerto, premiered in October 2016 at the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami, and conducted by Eduardo Marturet, was praised by the specialised press and had its South American Premiere in March 2017 with the Montevideo Philharmonic, led by Ligia Amadio. "Unabashedly romantic and deftly constructed. Di Concilio knows how to write and develop good melodic material and her score is a real crowd pleaser. At a compact twenty five minutes, the work does not wear out its welcome. Pianistic flair and vivid orchestral writing" (South Florida Classical Review)

Florencia Di Concilio’s First Piano Concerto, commissioned and premiered by the Montevideo Philharmonic with a premiere in the US in March 2013, also received raving reviews from the press. ”A memorable evening, in which Florencia Di Concilio’s extraordinary talent met the audience’s full recognition and standing ovation” (El Pais). “The concerto turned out to be a compact, yet wide-ranging marvel” (Charleston Today) “The highlight of the night was the new piano concerto by Uruguayan composer Florencia Di Concilio... it brought the audience to its feet.” (The Post and Courier)

Florencia Di Concilio’s latest concert pieces include her Three Etudes for piano, premiered at the DiMenna Center in NYC in June 2015 by Enrique Graf. "The etudes were a pleasure to hear. The second is a jazzy romance that seems to have a touch of Richard Rodgers to it - its close, lyrical melody occasionally breaks out, arching passionately into a higher register. The crooning melodic line, though, is set into a chromatic texture, constantly challenging the ear and threatening to pull the tune off course. The third was almost Lisztian in the crashing waves of its chords." (New York Classical Review)

Among recent film soundtracks, Florencia Di Concilio signed the original soundtrack for "Ava", a French feature film directed by Lea Mysius, and recently wrote the score for River Phoenix’s last film Dark Blood (directed by George Sluizer), posthumously completed and premiered in the Official Selection of Berlin International Film Festival.

Over the past few years Florencia Di Concilio has composed the original soundtrack for more than 30 award winning feature films and documentaries for cinema and television (ARTE, BBC, HBO, Sundance, Canal +, etc), working with a wide range of directors. Her versatile film scoring work has received critical praise from the LA Times, Variety, Entertainment Weekly, the New York Times, and has been released by Universal Records.

About her score for multi award winning film "Stranded", Kenneth Turan from the Los Angeles Times wrote, “Stranded’s director had other ways of making his narrative especially effective, starting with utilizing the film’s delicate, otherworldly score by composer Florencia Di Concilio to add a disturbing air to the proceedings.” About "Dark Blood", Variety writes, “Florencia Di Concilio’s guitar-heavy score enhances the film’s moods” and the LA Times refers to her “lush orchestral score" for "Bikes vs. Cars" as being the “icing on the cake”.

Comfortable in both instrumental and electronic composition and performance, Florencia Di Concilio frequently receives commissions from dance companies, soloists, music ensembles, and visual artists, such as the acclaimed CobosMika contemporary dance company, or celebrated French artist Camille Henrot in a piece commissioned by the French National Museum Jeu de Paume.

Florencia Di Concilio holds piano, composition, and orchestration degrees from the New England Conservatory in Boston, the College of Charleston, and the Conservatoire Supérieur de Paris. As a classical pianist, Florencia has won top prizes at national and international competitions and has extensively performed as a soloist and chamber musician. A sought-after guest lecturer and panelist, Florencia Di Concilio has conducted film music and composition workshops at among others the Netherlands Film and Television Academy, the Sundance Festival, Montréal Film Festival, University of Miami, and the Ministry of Culture in Lima under an invitation of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Florencia Di Concilio's music is published by Bosworth Music / Music Sales, and is represented by Annette Gentz Film & Arts, Berlin.
