Bio

Josh Wynter is a British pianist and composer based in Cape Town, South Africa.

His classical training beginning as head chorister of Chichester Cathedral, but being the son of a 1960s pop star naturally bestowed a passion for contemporary styles and artists that has fuelled demand for his incredibly diverse scores for television and film, all of which delve generously deep into both spheres of the musical diaspora.

Graduation from Bristol University with a first class degree in music and a masters in scoring for film and television was swiftly followed by original commissions from celebrated Scottish photographer Rankin, and Josh has not looked back since, embracing everything from wildlife documentaries to commercial projects with the same attention to detail and natural curiosity that marks his creative process.

Original scores for international award-winning television series Ocean Adventurer, Neill Anthony Private Chef, Sarah Graham’s Food Safari, Bitten: Sarah Graham Cooks Cape Town have successfully employed styles that range from sweeping epic orchestral works to cutting edge electronica.

An international Music and Sound Award nominated (and Cannes Lion-winning) advert scored by Josh Pearl & Dean ‘Tumbleweed’ was recorded in 1950s Western style live in Cape Town with full orchestra and other prominent television adverts for Emirates, Mazda, KWV, JC Le Roux, Woolworths Australia and ExxonMobil are more recent examples of Josh’s ability to embrace and harness the power of musical diversity.

Josh’s feature film credits include award-winning gangster thriller, The Antwerp Dolls and award-winning sci-fi web series Horizon, as well feature documentary Nobody’s Died Laughing, which stars Charlize Theron, Dame Janet Suzman and Sophia Loren among others.

Classically trained, yet born into a musical family as the son of 1960s pop singer Mark Wynter, Josh’s work unites this stylistic dichotomy of pop and classical with a range and adaptability that is uniquely his own.

Currently based in Cape Town, South Africa, Josh was head chorister of Chichester Cathedral and top music scholar at Charterhouse School, where he began playing in bands and listening to electronic music alongside his formal choral, viola, organ and piano lessons. After graduating from Bristol University with a first class degree in music, Josh studied for a Masters in Composition for Television and Film under acclaimed British wildlife composers Martin Kiszko and William Goodchild, gaining a distinction and submitting a student portfolio of real-life commissions, with clients including Rankin and True Religion Jeans.

Josh’s recent work in South Africa includes original scores for international television series Ocean Adventurer (SABC3), Neill Anthony Private Chef (SABC3), Sarah Graham’s Food Safari (M-Net), Bitten: Sarah Graham Cooks Cape Town (SABC3) and Jenny & Reza’s Fabulous Food Academy (Food Network); his music can also be heard in recent television adverts for Mazda, KWV, JC Le Roux, Two Oceans Wine and Woolworths Australia.

In an industry that is often quick to label composers with a single genre, Josh has managed to avoid simplistic classification through the sheer diversity of his projects and his determination to continually explore new musical possibilities; 2015 saw projects as diverse as British gangster thriller The Antwerp Dolls and award-winning sci-fi web series Horizon, whilst this year Josh has composed and conducted the score for cinematic, theatrical-action documentary Nobody’s Died Laughing, which celebrates the life and work of activist and entertainer Pieter-Dirk Uys and features Charlize Theron, Dame Janet Suzman and Sophia Loren.
